Massachusetts | Experience Everything This Life Has to Offer

Off the coast of Nantucket, in November of 2002, my husband was lost at sea in a nor’easter after a late afternoon kiteboarding mishap. I didn’t know him then.

Helicopters flew over him, but didn’t see him. Rescue boats were called off because of rough seas and high winds. Friends lined the shore with their cars and aimed their headlights out over the water, hoping. He floated around out there in the cold dark stormy ocean all alone for 6.5 hours before the tide brought him back and tossed him out onto the sand.

Many of you have heard his story, in fact the kind people at Life Is Good saw him on the news and sent him some swag. His experience changed him, and to hear him tell it is really a gift. I’m so grateful he did all that swimming, we’ve been married for almost 8 years now, and I can’t imagine my life without him.

At one point in the middle of the night he didn’t think there was a chance that he would live, and he thought about drifting off to sleep, and how easy that would be. Instead, he made a decision to experience everything this life has to offer, even if that meant choosing to experience drowning and hypothermia. And that decision saved his life.

Michael has lived on Nantucket for 23 years, I met him here 10 years ago (in 2006) and we’ve been married for 8. He owns and operates Nantucket Media Systems, an audio/video sales and installation company, which he started in 2002. He is an avid cycler and just completed his first PMC ride in August, raising over 10K.
